  1. You mention the wifi issue with this, have you had chance to try the laptop out with something like 12.04LTS at all? I realise it is a backward step in software but there is a possibility that would have the fix for your wifi issue.
After having used the laptop for a week or 2 now, what are your continued thoughts on it?

    • No I haven’t tried 12.04. The wireless connection is stable now, and whilst it annoys me that I only have 2 bar strength, when I am sitting by the WAP, it isn’t dropping out all the time. I think disabling N was what fixed that. I did try upgrading the kernel to a very recent one, but that made no difference at all.

    • Overall impressions are getting better. I am getting used to the trackpad and the keyboard. I love the boot time and the battery life, and the form factor is perfect for me. The suspend and resume works perfectly. Occasionally the wireless can take too long to come back, after a suspend, but you can always restart network manager if you get impatient.

  2. Could you say a bit more about adding the SSD to the mSATA port. Does this give you two seperate visible drives of 128GB and 256GB? Is it possible to swap out the 128GB SSD or is it soldered in? Is it possible to fit a machanical hard drive on the mSATA port, or is there only enough space for a small form factor SSD?

    Thank you!

    Guy

Yes, at least under Ubuntu, I have not tested under any other OS.

Sorry, I have no idea – I didn’t look. I did take photographs though, which are still sitting on my camera – I will try and get them uploaded tonight.

There is only space for an mSATA drive I think, but you can judge for yourself when I upload the photographs.

  4. I’ve bought a Novatech 1410 on your recommendation as I could work around the wifi issue if needed with a micro usb wifi dongle, and have put ubuntu 13.04 on it. I have not had any wifi issues so far with the built in wifi in wireless N mode, i.e. not had to do the setting to restrict it to wireless G. My wireless N is on the 2.4GHz band rather than 5GHz due due living in a victorian house with 6 inch thick internal brick walls which makes 5GHz wifi not work well.

    • Thanks for the feedback, glad to know the wireless can work okay and I will have a further play. To be fair my wireless works fine, apart from the reported low signal strength.

In the meantime, would love to read your thoughts on the n1410 more generally – there were precious few reviews on-line for it.
